The King’s Head at Barmby on the Marsh, I bow at your feet. This traditional village pub might not be the obvious choice for families. But, trust me, go once and you’ll be a loyal follower. We return again and again primarily because the food is outstanding, their Sunday carvery (served 11am-3pm, costing £7.95 per adult and £4.95 per child) is by far the best I’ve ever visited. They will even do you a free baby portion, but by 2.5, our little one was eating so much we felt it was time to buy her a junior plate. The food is so delicious and with the added bonus that you feel like you’ve had a week’s intake of vegetables in one sitting.

The dining rooms are quite formal, so you could always ask to sit in the bar if your kids are a little louder, or you don’t want the added pressure of the white table cloths. There is a lovely relaxed seating area next to the bar with a selection of children’s books and teddies, you can sit here pre or post meal. We’ve retreated to this area before with dessert, when keeping a toddler at the table becomes too much.

The pub has a tapas menu, a changeable specials board and lunch and evening menus, all enhanced by local suppliers. The children’s menu is better than most I’ve seen. No junk food here, just quality ingredients, priced at £5.25 per meal. Save room for dessert, as the home made puddings are very special and always presented so beautifully. The ice cream flavours are unique (peanut butter or nutella anyone?) and the children’s knicker bocker glory is an enormous treat.

There is a large disabled toilet, changing mat, baby wipes, nappy sacks, small sink, towel (no scary hand dryer!), all the little things that make life a little easier with kids. There is plenty of car parking to the rear of the pub, and an overflow car park for busier times.

You can also hire a marquee at the back of the pub for £75, which includes a private bar, table cloths and decorations. Perfect for christenings, birthday parties and the like.

Take away fish and chips are available most lunch times and evenings but check the website for details. The pub even has freshly baked bread for sale on the bar, along with a few other deli items. What more could you ask for?
