Each month we will interview local mums who have started up their own business and find out a bit more about their world….

East Riding Mums meets …

Name: Laura Cavanagh

Business: Buggy Fitness, Market Weighton. View Facebook page here.

**Buggy Fitness meet every Wednesday at 11.30am at Aspen Close Park, Market Weighton. Classes are £3, no booking necessary. Starts again Wednesday 13 January 2016.**

Family: Myself, my husband Matthew, our 4 year old daughter Sofia, our baby boy George (who is 8months) and our dog Baxter.

Top tip for something to do with your family that is free, or costs very little: The thing we like doing most as a family which is totally free is going for a nice long walk. The East Riding has some great walks and is so picturesque. We put George in the carrier and off we go. It means we can include Baxter and tire him out too!

Best way to relax once the kids are in bed: Once the kids are in bed we love to watch a good film or a series on Netflix to relax.

Q: Firstly, tell us about Buggy Fitness.

Buggy Fitness is a weekly fitness session, held outdoors, for mummies. There is of course no need for childcare as you bring baby along to class in their buggy, and it’s a great way of meeting new like-minded friends too. We concentrate on getting our bodies back to full fitness after giving birth and use lots of different equipment to help tone and strengthen our bodies.

Q: How did the idea for Buggy Fitness come about?

I decided to start the Buggy Fitness classes as there was nothing like this already established in the immediate Market Weighton area. I already knew lots of new mummies from taking George to baby massage etc… So I knew there was a real need for a class like this from talking to other mummies in the area. I was made redundant from my day job before I had George so I didn’t have a job to go back to after my maternity leave. I had all the relevant qualifications to start up the business so I just thought why not?! It’s worth a shot!

Q: Did you have experience in running your own business?  How did you start?

I did already have experience of running my own business as I also have a Dance business (Limelight Dance & Drama) in york. I have always danced from a very young age and enjoy teaching dance as well as running my Buggy fitness sessions.

Q: What’s it like to work at Buggy Fitness?

Working for myself and doing Buggy Fitness is great. I am able to drop Sofia off at pre school then get myself & George ready for class. I always plan the sessions a few days before when the kids have gone to bed (no Netflix that night haha) so I’m always organised and ready to go on the day of the actual class. The class its self lasts an hour, but we usually end up chatting afterwards so we’re always there a little longer, which is fine by me. It’s a great way to get out of the house as I do find after having a baby you sometimes become a bit of a hermit and you feel so much better once you get out and about and into a little routine again.

Q: What’s your advice for fellow ‘mumpreneurs’?

My advice to any fellow mumpreneurs would be just to go for it! You never know if these things are going to take off unless you try. If you have an idea give it a go. What have you got to lose?!

Q: What do you think has been the key to the success of Buggy Fitness?

I think the key to my business success so far is that on a personal level I can take George to work with me which is great, and I also love what I do and it makes me feel so much better about myself once I’m out, socialising and exercising. On a business level I really do think there was a gap in the market for this class in their area so I jumped on that opportunity.

Q: What makes Buggy Fitness different?

I think what makes me different from other buggy fitness classes is that I’m a mum too… I take George to class with me and I do all the exercises with the buggy as other participants do so I really understand how and if the exercises work. I think I also “get” what areas of the bodies mums want to work on and see improvement in. Overall my classes are really relaxed and friendly and I think that’s so important. There’s no pressure on anyone and that makes for a great atmosphere and great results.

Q: What are your plans for the future?

In the future I plan to expand Buggy Fitness- I would like to add more weekly classes in the area and expand to other local areas. I would also love to offer some indoor exercises classes that you can bring baby along to too.
