Joy Barker and daughter Emmie (3) visited The Potting Shed & South Cave Plant Centre, read on to hear what they thought…

“South Cave’s best kept secret, the Potting Shed and Seedlings Play Area is a tot friendly café with a charming atmosphere and excellent facilities.

The Potting Shed café has two areas to eat in; a quieter area nearest the entrance, in which you can catch up with friends over lunch, a cuppa and homemade cake and browse a small selection of well-priced gifts. For those with little people, venture around the corner and there is a pretty little area, decorated with magical murals of toadstools and fairies, for young families to enjoy lunch, a sweet treat and a play.

You will find a well-stocked soft play area for a handful of under 5’s to potter as noisily as they wish whilst their lunch is prepared. A basket of baby and toddler toys near a dresser of child friendly cutlery, ensures that even the smallest of guests are kept happy over lunch. There is even a Jumperoo to pop the little one in, as well as plenty of high chairs (13 in total!)

The menu covers a wide range of light snacks, warm lunches and children’s sandwiches and good value hot meals at only £3.75. My grown up pannini was absolutely delicious, served with salad, coleslaw and crisps.

The toilet facilities are a potty training parents dream, baskets of wipes, nappy bags, a potty, stool and baby changing drop down unit.

If you can drag them away from the play area, you can then make your way over to the greenhouses where there are a range of bedding plants and shrubs at a reasonable price. The tots can grab a toy trolley to select their plants to take to the planting area. South Cave’s answer to Mr Bloom was ready to assist us by introducing their concept to the children; choose a colourful planter (prices start at £1), select your plants (6 pansies were £2.25) and grab a fun sized trowel and compost bucket ready to make something delightful to take home.

We were told to stay as long as we wanted, and to make as much mess as we wished, with even a wipe for hands supplied to us at the till. We came away feeling thoroughly well fed, with greener fingers, a planter for the garden and change in the purse.

Highly recommended – just please keep it a secret!”
