Seedlings Garden Centre is my newest discovery. We spent a long sunny five hours there last weekend and still had to drag the children away!

Lewis, Daphne, their son Richard, and wife Faye (and three children!) have made the brave move from Darlington last year to set up a brand new Garden Centre, Cafe and Visitor Attraction.

The family are battling against the terrible reputation of Two Hoots Animal Farm. Apart from being on the same piece of land, the similarities end there! Great thought and care has gone into creating a visitor attraction to fill a gap in the market in this neck of the woods.

Through the garden centre you find Sammy Seeds Fun Zone, with a gate I felt safe the children could roam around a little, and they certainly did as there is so much to do. We started by having a look around the animals, exotic birds, ducks, pheasants, alpacas, wallabies, guinea pigs, rabbits, pigs, a Shetland pony and pygmy goats. Belle and Max were really lucky and got to feed the goats, which they loved!

There is a generous sized play park for younger and older children. Stepping stones and a tight rope amused the kids before helping themselves to scooters, bikes, trikes and cars on a giant race track. There is also a giant sand pit, which the kids played in for over an hour! Sunken tyres provided another fun climbing frame. Belle and Max struck lucky again and were able to stroke and feed the guinea pigs; Bungle, George and Zippy!

This is the perfect spot for a picnic, with a huge open grass area. The owners have thought of it all with picnic benches and a shaded area under a gazebo. We hadn’t packed up so we tried the cafe run by Faye. The children’s menu was a refreshing change, with not a chicken nugget or chip in sight. Belle chose the kids’ all day breakfast and demolished the lot. I had a cheese and red pepper omlette. The food was delicious, home cooked and reasonably priced. There was also a fantastic selection of home baked cakes. The cafe also had high chairs and a massive box of lego.

The toilets and a nappy changing station although perfectly adequate, are located in the car park, so spend a penny before going in.

Seedlings can be found to the west of Carlton, look for their sign on the High Street in Carlton, which directs you out to Hirst Road. Keep following the road and look out for it on the right. It is a hidden gem at the moment, but I am sure it won’t be for long!
